Paytm as a Third-party UPI Application

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has approved One97 Communications Limited (OCL), the parent company of Paytm, to operate as a Third-party Application Provider (TPAP) under the multi-bank model for UPI services. This much-anticipated license allows Paytm to continue offering Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services to its app users, even after its banking unit, Paytm Payment Bank Limited (PPBL), ceases operations post-15 March 2024 due to regulatory actions.

Under this new model, Paytm will partner with four banks — Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, and Yes Bank — that will serve as its Payment System Providers (PSPs). PSPs are banks that enable UPI apps to connect with the banking system, and only banks can fulfil this role. Previously, PPBL provided this service for Paytm, holding the TPAP license, which negated the need for a separate TPAP license for Paytm. Unlike its rivals, such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Cred, and Amazon Pay, Paytm had its own bank.

Additionally, Yes Bank will act as the merchant acquiring bank for Paytm’s existing and new UPI merchants. Consequently, the @Paytm handle will be redirected to Yes Bank, ensuring that users and merchants can continue UPI transactions and AutoPay mandates seamlessly. The NPCI has instructed Paytm to complete the migration of all existing handles and mandates to the new PSP banks as soon as possible.

Paytm, the third-largest UPI payments app in India, processed 1.41 billion transactions worth Rs. 1.65 lakh crore in February, down from 1.57 billion transactions valued at Rs. 1.93 lakh crore in January, according to NPCI data. For Paytm, a significant portion of transactions and approximately 75% of its Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) come from customers using UPI for transactions on its app.

Paytm Enhances User Privacy with Custom UPI IDs

To improve user privacy by enabling payments without disclosing mobile numbers, Paytm has implemented customized UPI IDs. With ambitions to expand to more banking partners, the service, which is presently supported by Yes Bank and Axis Bank, allows users to create handles like name@ptypes or name@ptaxis. The new UPI ID system allays worries about the accessibility of personal data in digital transactions by enabling people to send and receive money without sharing their phone numbers. The business claims that this update provides a more flexible and safe approach to use UPI for regular payments, such as paying merchants or shops or settling invoices with delivery agents. Paytm has expanded the acceptance of UPI for Indian customers overseas as well. In the UAE, Singapore, France, Mauritius, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, UPI payments are now accepted, enabling users to send money abroad with the same app.
