Nowadays having a credit card is imperative; a powerful financial tool with which you can do anything and everything even without 'adequate balance at the time'. Banks do not allow all and sundry to get a credit card. There is an element of trust here. Any bank makes sure that the person has a scrupulous banking history as well as a steady income on the basis of which they lend him/ her money. Hence every lender usually mandates income/ employment proof before authorizing the card. But guess what, there are ways around this rule too. And no, it is nothing illegal.
Salary may be an income. But not all incomes are necessarily salary- your shares that ensure a steady flow of cash into your account, income from property, trust money, income from fixed deposit to name a few. You can even get yourself a credit card if your parent(s)/ guardian supports you financially. Can you think of other such scenarios where one has a stable income but is not working?
Stay-at-home spouses has as much right in the family income especially if he/ she is also in charge. And they can certainly apply for their own credit card.
Many banks permit you to put in grants, child support, alimony, legal compensation etc. as income. And the best part is, these do not even have to be reported.
Many these days are making plans and working hard in their 20s and 30s to retire by 40. They can easily show papers related to that as income.
Many parents opt to make their child (mostly studying in another city/ country) a co-signer. Though the other party will be responsible for the debt (like the non-earning party), the first party's income can be leveraged for this purpose.
If you do not have any income for qualifying for a credit card, you do not have to worry as you still have a few options left. You should save up for a secured credit card. This credit card will require an upfront payment as a security deposit and the amount will have to be equal to your credit limit.
The one way that your credit card company will know taht you are unemployed is if you reveal this to them. You may have to call your card issuer if you are unemployed as you might be able to get a low interest rate, and also be allowed to defer your payments.
If you apply for a credit card online, the credit card issuer might issue your same-day approval. However, you must note that only a few of companies will give customers to get and use their credit card the on which it is approved and issued.
